The Dory Fleet Fishmarket

by

Rayna Jensen

NEWPORT BEACH'S Dory Fleet Market began in 1891 after a local enterprising fisherman became dissatisfied with selling his catch to wholesalers. He docked his boat at McFadden Harbor, now called Newport Pier, and began marketing his fish to the ladies and gents on the beach. Over a hundred years later, the Dory Fleet Market continues to reel in quite a following of customers, though without the top hats and petticoats.

Every weekend, the fisherman set out in their dory boats between midnight and 2am, usually returning with the day’s catch before 6am when the market opens. On this Saturday morning, it’s barely past 6 and the tiny dock is already bustling with the chattering of customers, the sounds of squirming sea trout, the dull thwack of knives on wet wooden cutting boards, and the anxious squawk of hungry seagulls.k letter
