The International Center for Writing and Translation, in collaboration with the Departments of German and Philosophy, launches an on-going series of colloquia addressing “The Translation of Philosophy and Philosophy of Translation” with a discussion of Heidegger’s Beiträge zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis), a text whose title Contributions to Philosophy (On the Event/On Enowning) already raises fundamental issues of the translatability of his thought. The Beiträge makes up Heidegger’s “other” magnum opus, the only book-length project he wrote after Being and Time. Composed in the 1930’s but not published until after his death and the appearance of his lectures, it explores in a systematic and poetic fashion all the themes of his late philosophy. As an example of his “thinking through language,” it makes the “task of the translator” an essentially philosophical, and perhaps impossible, one.
Prof. Daniela Vallega-Neu (Philosophy, CSU Stanislaus), who has published numerous works on Heidegger and is a co-translator of the Contributions, will lead a discussion on Heidegger’s late thought, exploring in detail concepts and passages that pose particular challenges for translation.
