Interdisciplinary Research & Community Storytelling

Meet Phuc Duy Nhu To, a member of the the Learning from our AAPI Leaders research team at UCI

Next week, Tuesday, May 25, 2021, 12:00-1:00 p.m, the Learning from our AAPI Leaders Research Team will meet. Learning from our AAPI Leaders is an archival/oral history/video project documenting the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in Orange County. The project was Initially inspired by the 150th anniversary of the city of Santa Ana. The research team, led by faculty and staff in Asian American Studies and the UCI Libraries, pivoted towards documenting the dual impacts of COVID-19 and racism. In anticipation of this event, we're spotlighting some of the participants in the event. Phuc Duy Nhu To will be introducing the project and event next week.

Phuc is a queer, international student, researcher, and community health worker from Vietnam. They received their B.S. in Biological Science and M.A. in Asian American Studies at the University of California Irvine. With an intellectual investment in medicine and healthcare at the intersection of race, class, gender, and immigration status, Phuc is currently a researcher for the Sharing Comfort and Care: Intergenerational Story-Mapping in the Cambodian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities of Orange County Project as well as a student mentor and a member of the planning committee for the Visualizing Our Identities and Cultures for Empowerment (VOICE): Asian American and Pacific Islander Community in a time of Pandemic Photovoice Project. Outside of their intellectual pursuit, Phuc is a community health worker at the Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Community Alliance, a member of the OC API Taskforce established in summer 2020.
