Dissertation Topic:
Broadly I work in Transnational U.S. History with a particular focus on the histories of Native peoples subject to US Imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth-centuries. My dissertation examines education in Hawai‘i as a process of cultural reform aimed at assimilating Native youth to American conventions of behavior and respectability. More specifically I consider the motivations for—and the implications of—gendered vocational curricula on the resulting Hawaiian-American workforce. These educational interventions transformed the early twentieth-century economy and generations of Hawaiian youth.
