Nations in the Street: A Pop-Up Panel on the Recent Demonstrations around the World

When: Tuesday, November 5, 2019, 11:00 am to 12:15 pm in HIB 135

The Forum for the Academy and the Public's Pop-Up events are meant to enable interdisciplinary conversations among scholars, experts, and the public about urgent and pressing contemporary issues. After the first Pop Up of this academic year in September that focused on the crisis in Hong Kong, this one looks at protests that have broken out around the world in other seemingly disparate places. What exactly is going on in Chile, Haiti, Lebanon, and other countries? Are these merely local outbursts or do they say something more about the state of governance worldwide?

Please join us for a wide-ranging discussion with the Forum's director Amy Wilentz (Literary Journalism - Haiti), Heidi Tinsman (History - Latin America), Scott Martelle (LA Times - author and journalist), Stephen Pascoe (History - Middle East), and moderated by Jeffrey Wasserstrom (History - China).
