GSS Major Elizabeth Snyder's essay "The Guerrilla Girls: Humor and Culture-Jamming as Embodied Resistance", received the Upper-Division Writing Award in the Humanities and Arts category!
Abstract: This paper argues for the embodied nature of the Guerrilla Girls' 1990's artivism. This group mainly agitated for increased diversity in the New York art world, which largely excluded women and artists of color. The Guerrilla Girls used a variety of tactics as activists--anonymity and culture-jamming being their most successful--which allowed them to develop a platform in a white male dominated space with femme-marked bodies and voices. Ultimately, the goal of this paper is to examine the extent to which these tactics influence feminist resistance today.
