Rose Bush recent film as a director of photography by Anthony Giacchino and Alice Doyard, COLETTE, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short .
She had this to say about her experience working on the film and her UCI educational foundation:
COLETTE follows ninety-one year-old French Resistance member Colette Marin-Catherine, who is encouraged by a young history student to make a pilgrimage to the concentration camp where the Nazi war machine killed her brother. Colette, was a member of the French Resistance in the 1940s, but the film is rather about today and the continued need to illuminate the implications of war, genocide, and authoritarianism.
In my view, the movie COLETTE, is an act of resistance, transmission, and healing.
Developing as a filmmaker at the University of California, Irvine continues to be a foundational element in my process and perspective of the medium and industry. Having an understanding of the historical, theoretical, philosophical, cultural, and practical implications of visual culture and filmmaking - and a framework through which to conceptualize the act of representation, has been a crucial element in my process as a filmmaker. I think about my time at UCI on a daily basis and it continues to cultivate a frontier of discovery in my practice making films.
As a filmmaker, sometimes a project comes along that profoundly impacts you and this is one that I know I'll always hold close to my heart. Our team is so inspired to continue to share COLETTE's passion for life with others.
