'We Came Here Multilingual’: Afro-Latinidad, Black Excellence, And Transforming The Humanities A Panel Discussion On “Chico And Rita” (2010)

February 11th, 2021
5 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Guest panelists will use the film “Chico and Rita” (2010) to explore best practices for affirming Afro-Latinx, Black, and Brown students’ journeys in the Humanities. We see the students that are currently and historically underrepresented as the future of the humanities. In a conversation between professors Raul Fernandez and Marie Nubia-Feliciano we envision how to amplify these students voices, create opportunities for research, and identify promise and talent.

Raul Fernandez (Chicano & Latino Studies, UCI) completed his secondary education in Cuba, received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1966, and his Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate University in 1971. Currently Professor Emeritus, he was an active member of the UCI faculty from 1969 to 2014.

Marie Nubia-Feliciano (Chicano & Latino Studies, UCI, & Atallah College of Educational Studies, Chapman University) holds a Ph.D. in Education. She teaches part time for Chapman University and UC Irvine. Her research interests focus the experiences of individuals and communities at the boundaries, and specifically on AfroLatinidad.
