GERMAN (S19)103  GERMAN GERMAN CINEMA: WEIMAR UND DIE FOLGENEVERS, K.
We study groundbreaking films of the Weimar era when Berlin was the cultural center of Europe.  Fusing modernist aesthetics with backward-looking subject matter (vampires, golems, mad scientists), celebrating the speed and change of modernity with anti-modern and reactionary undertones (authoritarian leadership and nationalist mythology), exploring the boundaries sex and gender with unprecedented openness while producing icons of purity and innocence, Weimar Cinema remains the most astounding period in German cinema and is widely regarded as one of the most influential moments in film history.  In the second part of our course we explore some of the echoes and influences of Weimar cinema that continue to reverberate in contemporary German and European cinema. Readings include selections from literary and cultural history of the Weimar Republic and contemporary Germany and Europe. Taught in German.
