Congratulations to Xuxu Song,  Ph.D. candidate in German! Song received the prestigious graduate research fellowship for a year in Germany from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, which will help her continue her research on the Athenaeum (1798-1800), a journal of early German romanticism. In her dissertation, Song asks how the journal could be understood differently if we look at it as a work of art on its own rather than studying its individual contributors. Song says this project will not only offer a new perspective on early German romanticism, but most importantly, help us understand how radical the Athenaeum is with its numerous genres and continual production, which will lead us to a different notion of what constitutes a work of art. During the current world crisis, Song believes the spirit of “collaboration” and “collectiveness” embraced by the romantics is extra relevant.

In Xuxu's words:
"Being awarded a one-year research fellowship by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst is a great honor and a wonderful opportunity for me. I'm excited to go back  to Germany, to Europe, and to spend the longest time there since my half-year exchange program during my undergraduate years. This fellowship means a lot to my research because I will get to go to new places, access lesser-known primary sources and archives, work with and learn from excellent scholars at such renowned institutions as the University of Mannheim and the Goethe-Haus, be around during the opening months of the new Deutsches Romantik-Museum in Frankfurt, and most importantly, get involved in authentic German and European culture."
