Time & Date: XX a.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2003
Class: Chinese 2B
Instructor: XXXX
Lesson Covered: Lesson 8 in the INTERMEDIATE READER OF MODERN CHINESE
Number of students in attendance: 15
Prepared by: Akemi Morioka, Academic Coordinator of Japanese

Time Management:

10:02- Ms. XXXX wrote todayユs lesson plan on the board and had students read it.
10:06- Had a group of four students present a skit they had prepared; the content was based on the topic discussed in the previous lesson (Lesson 7).

* She brought puppets for each student's role.
* The four presenters were having fun, but there were some students who were not paying much attention. It would have attracted more attention if the presentation was done in front of the class.

10:12- Wrote sentences on the board and asked students about things which are especially
occurring a lot this year, such as rain, flu, and car accidents.
10:16- Introduced new words of the Lesson 8 with cards.

* She had a student stick those cards on the board with magnets.

10:20- Had each student check those words with the list in the textbook.
10:24- Called students and asked them to pick a word on the board and use the word in a sentence.
10:30- Had students open the textbook and had them read one sentence each by taking turns.
10:32- Passed out a 3x5 index card to each student.
10:34- Had students listen to the tape of lesson 8 (man's voice.)
10:36- Asked students questions about the content of what they had just heard.
10:42- Had students listen to the tape again (woman's voice this time.)
10:45- Had students write key sentences on the given index cards.
10:48- Asked several students to read the key sentences to the class.

Good points:
・Ms. XXXX had full-control of the class. She is very friendly, and yet, has authority over the students, which is necessary for good classroom control.
・There was always on-going communication between the teacher and students.
・She prepared realias (puppets) and cards for new vocabulary.

Suggestions for improvement:
・The direction of the communication flow was from the teacher toward the students all the time. It would have been better if there were other communication flows such as the one from the student(s) to the teacher, from a student to another student, etc.
・Ms. XXXX may have not been conscious, but she called on four students much more often than other students in the class.

Summary:
As a whole, Ms. XXXX's class was well-organized, informative, and yet had a pressure-free fun atmosphere. The way she teaches is communicative. I think she is a quality teacher. I enjoyed observing her class.
