According to Ommagio, 4 types of readings are: skimming, scanning, extensive reading, & intensive reading, and these 4 types are explained as follows in Dos mundos: A Communicative Approach:
  1. Scanning means searching for a particular piece of information. For example, you can scan a menu to look for something that appeals to you, or you can scan newspaper ads for items of interest. .....You don't need to understand every word in an ad to search for the information you need or desire.
  2. Skimming means getting an overview of the main ideas in a reading. For example, people often skim newspaper articles or will skim a new chapter in a textbook before deciding which section to concentrate on. You should always skim a reading selection before reading it.
  3. Intensive reading is what you do when you are studying. For example, you read a chemistry assignment intensively, thinking about almost every sentence, making sure you understand every word.
  4. Extensive reading skills are used for most for reading purposes. When you read extensively, you understand the main ideas and most of the content. You do not study the material, however, and there are usually words you do not understand. When reading extensively you use context and common sense to guess at the meaning of the words that you do not understand. Sometimes there will be whole sentences (or even paragraphs) that you only vaguely understand. You use a dictionary only when an unknown word prevents you from understanding the main ideas in the passage. Extensive reading is associated with reading large amounts of reading material.

*In Dos mundos: A Communicative Approach, you will read the selections in the first few chapters intensively in order to start reading in Spanish. But for the most part we want you to avoid intensive reading in order to learn to read extensively. Most of the readings we have provided are for practice with extensive reading.

Extensive reading
Extensive reading
   2. 18 pages, 24 pages, 30 pages, 40 pages, 54 pages
