Advanced Japanese
The Japanese 3A-3B-3C series will build on the content knowledge as well as the linguistic skills that students acquired in 2nd-Year Japanese. While students discussed a variety of phenomena and social issues that were closely related to their personal lives throughout 2nd-Year Japanese, more abstract topics and themes derived from a larger perspective will be discussed in the 3rd-Year course. The goal of this series is to foster students in becoming competent and culturally literate users of Japanese. Students will not only learn about Japanese culture and society, but will also be expected to develop skills by the end of the series enabling them to acquire and construct knowledge of culture on their own, as well as to express their thoughts and opinions regarding these issues.

In terms of development of linguistic skills, the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be fostered, with increased emphasis upon reading skills. Students will learn more advanced grammatical patterns and useful expressions in Japanese and expand their vocabulary. A majority of the reading materials will be authentic, and students will be expected to comprehend them with assistance from a dictionary.

About 300 new kanji characters will be introduced, along with kanji compounds formulated from both new and previously learned kanji. Homework will be announced on a regular basis.
