Coverage: up to Yookoso p. 424 (end of C. 6)
Reading (50 pts):
The Reading and Writing exams will be administered in your regular classroom. You'll have 50 minutes to complete both, and it is recommended that you spend about 30 minutes for the Reading exam, and 20 minutes on the Writing exam. You'll need a scantron for the Reading exam (#882-E or #882-ES), so don't forget to bring one to class.
The Reading exam will consist of two short writings.
Part I: true-false questions on a passage that
a Japanese student named Ms. Yumi Takada wrote about her favorite hobby
Part II: fill-in and multiple-choice questions on a passage that Mr. Kenta Yamaguchi wrote about hisfamily's favorite things to eat
Words used in the Reading Section but that may not been been
either formally introduced or emphasized in class are:

Writing (40 pts):
ＲＥＦＥＲRING ｔｏ ｔｈｅ ｉｎｆｏｒｍａｔｉｏn given on your sister, Mary, write a well-organized essay of at least 10 sentences in Plain Form about Mary's and your hobbies and plans for the summer. Use a variety of grammatical structure you have learned in Chapter 5 and 6, such as relative clauses, か・も・でも、上手・下手・とくい・にがて、できる、も、なる、ことがある、たい・たがる・ほしい・ほしがる、と思う、という、つもりだ、すぎる、しまう、ながら etc.
1. Quantity and variety of facts
2. Variety of expressions and vocabulary introduced in Chapter 5 and 6
3. Organization and flow (introduction/body/conclusion and appropriate usage of sentence connectors)
4. Grammatical accuracy (correct conjugation, particles, and word order)
5. Correct usage of hiragana, katakana, and kanji.
( 8 points each)
Speaking (40 pts):
*The Speaking test will be administered in the Language Lab in Humanities Hall (=HH269A). The test will begin ON TIME, so be sure not to be late.
*You'll be sitting facing a computer screen in the Language Lab, and will speak into the microphone of the headset you are wearing. The entire class (about 20 students) will be in the lab and speaking at the same time, so please be aware that it might be hard to concentrate.
*You'll not be allowed to bring any prepared notes with you but will be given time to prepare what you want to say, i.e., writing down ideas on a scratch paper, once you receive the speaking assignment. The scratch paper will be provided.
Task #1(20 points): You will leave
a message on your host mother's voicemail with information about some restaurants (using the polite/ 〜です／〜ますform).
Task #2 (20 points): You will leave a message on your friend's voicemail regarding a birthday present (using the plain form).
You will have three minutes to prepare for each
task and then one and half minutes to do the actual speaking

1. Accomplishment of Task: Volume and Content of Speech
2. Variety of Vocabulary & Expressions from Chapter 5 and 6
3. Accuracy: Precision of Vocabulary and Expression Usage
4. Accuracy: Pronuncition, Intonation and Fluency
( 10 points each)
Listening (50 pts):
The Listening exam will be given after the Speaking exam at the same location. You will answer 25 questions in English on the test sheet handed out to you, while listening to dialogues and a monologue through the headset. You will not need to bring a new scantron, because you'll use the back of the one that you used for the Reading exam.
Part I: 10 multiple-choice questions on 10 short dialogues
between Mr. Kawamura and Ms. Machida, in both polite and plain/casual forms
Part II: 8 true-false questions on a longer dialogue between Mr. Kawamura and Ms. Machida about hobbies, in plain/casual form
Part III: 7 multiple-choice questions about an essay written on the topic of food written by an exchange student in Japan,
in polite form
Words that are used in the Listening Section but may not been
been either formally introduced or emphasized in class:
Part l:グラム（gram), えん（yen)、もっと(more)、しっている(to know)、おしえている・おしえる（to teach）、デイビッド・コッパーフィールド (David Copperfield),ディケンズ (Dickens), 〜かな (I wonder)

Kanji (20 pts):
All kanji from Chapter 5 and 6. Study the words listed under each kanji in the workbook.
1x10=10 points.....reading kanji
1x10=10 points.......writing kanji
The kanji portion will be presented in a short paragraph format. Make sure that when you fill in kanji that you also add proper OKURIGANA (=accompanying hiragana) if necessary.
