Students interested in enrolling in a Chinese course at UCI must complete the following steps:

  1. Take the Chinese Placement Test.
  2. Complete a Student Language Background Survey (SLBS).
  3. Meet with a Chinese faculty for a Faculty Oral Interview to obtain an authorization code for the course.

What is the Chinese Placement Test?

The purpose of this test is to assess a student's preparation for course work in Chinese at UCI. Students will be placed into one of the following courses:

- CH 1A, 1B, 1C (Fundamental Mandarin Chinese.
- CH 2A, 2B, 2C (Intermediate Mandarin Chinese)
- CH 3A, 3B, 3C (Advanced Mandarin Chinese)

This test is the same test that is used to satisfy the Language Other Than English (Category VI) breadth requirement. If your score on this test is sufficiently high (2A or higher), you may request a Faculty Oral Interview to satisfy the breadth requirement. The Chinese Placement Test is administered through Testing Office and may not be repeated.

If you have never been exposed to any Chinese languages/dialects, you can be exempt from the written test AFTER signing a placement test waiver at Testing Office (SSII 2200) and fill out a language background survey.

Visit Testing Office for more information or to register for the next Chinese Placement Test.

Student Language Background Survey

Student Langauge Background Survey (SLBS) is available at the Testing Office. Students are required to complete one copy of SLBS during the Chinese Placement Test.
