Department: East Asian Studies

Post Date: November 26, 2018

News Details

In this course, we will explore the ways in which Korean cinema and literature represent women, while paying attention to how these art forms either reflect women's realities or construct socially and culturally desired images of women.   As such, we will investigate various ideologies and techniques with which Korean women resist or negotiate between their situated realities and the social, cultural and economic forces.  For this endeavor, we will begin by analyzing a few rare films that have been recently restored such as Sweet Dreams and stories that were produced during the Japanese colonial period. However, much of our attention will focus on the representation of women in rapidly changing Korea in the age of globalization.  Films by women directors and stories by women writers will be among the assignment list.
