Course description:

This course introduces and explores real and imaginary locations in traditional and modern Chinese literature and culture like the Orchid Pavilion, Moon Palace, Peach Blossom Spring, Grand View Garden, and Temple of Earth as well as cities such as Xi’an and Taipei. Our goals in both reading the literature where these places are located and reading the spaces these places form will be to gain a familiarity with Chinese cultural landmarks, to understand how they sometimes nest within one and other, and to consider how Chinese communities shape and are shaped by space and place.
