Don’t Take Away the Music: Intertextuality, Authenticity and Hybridity in K-pop

Dr. Crystal S. Anderson is affiliate faculty in Korean Studies at George Mason University and works in the fields of Transnational American Studies, Black Internationalism, Global Asias and Popular Music Studies. Her 2020 Book, Soul in Seoul: African American Music and K-pop, explores the impact of African American popular music on contemporary Korean pop, R&B and hip-hop and the role of global fans as the music press. In addition to articles, book chapters and interviews by media ranging from NPR and the The New Yorker, she manages KPK: Kpop Kollective, the oldest and only aca-fansite for K-pop, and KPOPCULTURE, a digital humanities project that curates information about K-pop music. A veteran blogger on Asian popular culture, she is also a former associate chief editor for hellokpop.
