Speaker
Steve Choe
Associate Professor of Critical Studies at San Francisco State University

Moderator
Lindsay Schaffer, UCR

This mini-seminar attempts to develop a critical language for describing the aesthetics of the contemporary K-drama. While acknowledging the difficulties of pursuing such a project, and raising questions around methodology, it looks at a selective number of drama series and proposes some key terms for thinking about these long-form narratives, namely emotion, temporality, and (tertiary) memory. As budgets for K-dramas rise and their popularity expands globally, Dr. Choe's paper takes seriously the ways in which they constitute structures of feeling and their capacity to constitute worlds of Koreanness.
