The Critical Theory Institute's annual lecture series welcomes Dr. Mahmood Mamdani, Herbert Lehman Professor of Government, Columbia University.

Each year, we have invited an internationally distinguished critical theorist to visit the campus to deliver a series of three lectures in which he or she develops his or her critical position and relates it to the contemporary theoretical scene. Each set of lectures is generally published in our Wellek Library Lecture Series.
This year, Prof. Mamdani will present a series of talks titled,

"Studying Trans-African Slaveries: Pitfalls of the Atlantic Model"

This year's lecture series will occur:

Wednesday, November 17, 4pm-6pm PST: "Trans-Atlantic Slavery: Turning Captives into Slaves"

Thursday, November 18, 4pm-6pm PST: "Africa: Captives, Soldiers and state-Builders"

Friday, November 19, 4pm-6pm PST: "The Indian Ocean: Different Futures"
