Professors Jane O. Newman, Gabriele Schwab, and Ngugi wa Thiong’o, and Ph.D. students Danah Alfailakawi, Ashley Call, and Anandi Rao attended and held lectures at the Global Humanities Institute on the “Challenges of Translation” in Santiago de Chile, Chile, in July, 2019. The two-week institute was funded by the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes and the Mellon Foundation, and UCI’s participation was also supported by UCI Humanities Commons. Ngugi wa Thiong’o held a key note address, “The Power of Translation. Bridging the Gulf between Cultures.” It was a fascinating event with additional participation by students and faculty from the University of Chile, Oxford University (UK), and the Western Cape University (South Africa).
