Faculty Grants

As part of its mission to promote the development and  dissemination of scholarship, the Humanities Commons awards grants to School of  Humanities faculty and graduate students to support research, conference  travel, publication subvention and conference planning.  Grants are  awarded twice a year in fall and spring quarters.  The Humanities Commons'  internal grant streams are funded through the Academic Senate (CORCL), the UCI  Office of Research, and the UC Humanities Network.
   

Faculty Grants

1) Collaborative Conference Grants (OPEN)   -    Deadline: 11/2/2018

Description
Collaborative Conference grants support academic conferences, symposia or colloquia held at UCI. These grants may also support a lecture series or works-in-progress series with a unifying theme during a quarter or the academic year.  Grant funds may be used for honoraria and travel expenses for invited speakers and for catering and conference supplies. 

Centers and research clusters supported by the Humanities Commons may apply for $1,500.
Other faculty collaborations may apply for up to $2,000.

Timeline:
o Notifications by December 3, 2018
o Funds must be expended by December 31, 2019

Grant Payments: Expenses and reimbursements will be processed by the department providing administrative support and charged to the Humanities Commons funds account. 

Submission: Applications must be submitted electronically via EEE Scout.

• Organizing Group (if applicable), Conference Name, Dates

• Grant amount requested and total conference budget
• Department providing administrative support to organize the conference

Upload a single PDF document (max 3 pages) with the following:
• A description of the conference or scholar series, its contribution to scholarship in this field/on this topic, and a list of key participants.
• A detailed budget for the conference
• A list of other conference sponsors and sources of funding.

Eligibility
A collaborative project must have at least two (2) co-directors. At least one should be a School of Humanities faculty member or a current School of Humanities lecturer who has demonstrated a commitment to fostering research on campus. Mellon Humanities Faculty Fellows are also eligible to apply for a collaborative conference grant.

2) Conference Travel (CLOSED)   -    Deadline: N/A

Description
Faculty Conference Travel Grants were awarded in Winter Quarter 2017

Grant funds may be used towards travel expenses, lodging at the conference, and conference registration fees.  They may not be used for conference meals, food while attending the conference or per diem. Preferences: junior and mid-career scholars attending national or major associational conferences in order to advance their research agenda; senior scholars engaged in a new research trajectory attending conferences specific to anew field or who are serving in governance capacity with the scholarly association sponsoring the conference.  Faculty giving presentations will receive priority over those serving as chairs or discussants.

Eligibility
Academic Senate faculty with appointments in the UCI School of Humanities are eligible to apply for faculty grants through the Humanities Commons.

3) Dean’s Mid-Career Manuscript Workshops (OPEN)   -    Deadline: 1/28/2019

Description
The purpose of the one-day manuscript workshop is to provide mid-career UCI Humanities faculty with substantive and constructive feedback from scholars in the field on a substantial draft of a second book manuscript in preparation for submission to a publisher for a contract or for publication.  The grant is intended to fund travel expenses, lodging and honoraria for 2-3 invited scholars, as well as meals and refreshments during the workshop. The workshop itself is limited to the faculty member, invited scholars, and up to 2 other guests whom the faculty member would like to include. Faculty recipients must be prepared to submit a substantial draft of a book manuscript two months before the workshop (e.g., September 15, 2019, for a November 15, 2019 workshop).

Timeline:
o Notifications by March 1, 2019.
o Manuscript workshop will be held in Fall 2019.

Logistics and Grant Award: The Humanities Commons will provide staff support and logistics for the manuscript workshops and handle all expenses related to the workshop.

Submission:
Applications must be submitted electronically by Monday, January 28, 11:00 pm, through EEE Scout.

o Name, Department and Year promoted to associate professor
o Names and affiliations of 5-6 proposed scholars and editors from California and the United States and their contact information, with the aim of bringing to campus 2-3 invited scholars for the workshop

Upload a single PDF with a narrative description of the second book project (1,000-2,000 words), a timeline indicating what has been written and what will be submitted for discussion, and plans for publication (any initial contacts with a publisher, preliminary contract, etc.).

Click “Save” to save your submission and review or complete at a later date.
Once you have completed your online application form, click “Submit Responses” to submit the application.  Application forms cannot be changed once they have been submitted.

Academic Senate faculty with an appointment in the UCI School of Humanities at Associate Level III to Associate Level V who are currently completing their second book project.

4) Publication Support (OPEN)   -    Deadline: 11/2/2018

Description
Max Request $2,000

Publication support grants of up to $2,000 will be awarded to monographs, edited volumes and articles under contract with a publisher. Grant funds may be used as a subvention to the publisher or for expenses related to preparing the manuscript such as image rights, copy-editing and/or indexing.

Exceptional requests above $2,000 will be considered for funding through the Dean’s research initiatives, only for permissions expenses related to monograph publication.

Timeline
o Notifications by December 3, 2018
o Funds must be expended by December 31, 2019

Grant Payments: Publication subvention grants will be paid directly to the press.  Grant funds for publication expenses incurred directly will be reimbursed. All expenses should be processed through the recipient’s home department.

If applying for a subvention, upload a letter from the publisher requesting subvention.

5) Research (CLOSED)   -    Deadline: N/A

Description
Faculty Research Grants were awarded in Winter Quarter 2017

Faculty Research Grants support expenses related to scholarly research projects, including flights, ground transportation and lodging for research travel; archival and copying fees; the purchase of supplies directly related to the project; translation and transcription of research materials; and graduate student research assistant stipends. Research cannot be used for travel to conferences, food expenses or per diem during travel or for the purchase of computers, printers, other hardware or personal items.
