OPPORTUNITIES for STUDENTS in the PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC of CHINA
The Chew-Liang Program provides funding for Chinese students to carry out “hands-on” study in the rural countryside. Recipients will be expected to live for a substantial period, normally six to nine months, in the rural community under study. Research award recipients will receive $3,000, with up to four grants awarded per year.
For the 2011-12 awards cycle, the Chew-Liang program is pleased to collaborate with two distinguished programs at Renmin University of China (RUC):
The collaborating programs will forward finalist dossiers to the Irvine Chew-Liang Steering Committee, who will exercise final selection.
CONDITIONS OF AWARD
Upon arrival in the community, award winners will provide the program steering committee an initial description of the community, including photos of the recipient on site. Upon the conclusion of the project, recipients will submit a final report with an executive summary, and including personal experiences, research findings, and photos. All reports and especially photos must be in electronic form and suitable for posting on the program’s website. Research awards will be paid in two installments, of $2,000 and $1,000. The first installment ($2,000) will be paid when the Steering Committee receives written acceptance of the award and its conditions. The second installment ($1,000) will be paid when the Steering Committee receives the final report.
OPPORTUNITIES for SCHOLARS at the UCI
The Chew-Liang program provides funding to UC Irvine Senate faculty or advanced graduate students to engage in studies relevant to Chinese rural development. The research must include a significant on-site rural component. Faculty and students in disciplines from across the campus are eligible to apply.
Grant recipients will receive up to $10,000, commensurate to the volume and quality of applications. Applications permitting, at least one award is expected in alternate years starting 2010-11.
Fellows will be expected to work on-site in the host rural community/communities for at least one-third of the award period. Upon arrival in the community, fellows will provide the program steering committee an initial description of the community with photos of the recipient on site. Upon the conclusion of the project, recipients will submit a final report with an executive summary, and including personal experiences, research findings, and photos. All reports and especially photos must be in electronic form and suitable for posting on the program’s website.
CONDITIONS OF AWARD
Awards will be paid in two installments—70% when the Steering Committee receives written acceptance of the award and its conditions, and the balance when the Steering Committee receives the final report.
