The Steckler Noguchi Museum Summer 19 NYC Internship and Award

Financial Details: This is an unpaid internship that provides an award of $6,500 upon successful completion of the internship. The successful applicant should plan to spend a total of 240 hours (40 hours per week x 6 weeks x $15 an hour) at the internship contingent upon completion of hours. Proposals from students demonstrating financial need are encouraged.

The award will be processed and paid following completion of the internship and receipt of the following materials to Cecilia Flanagan at c.flanagan@uci.edu:

1. A one-page summary written by the intern describing his/her role in the summer’s internship projects delineating the intern’s contributions to the Museum’s short and/or long-term projects and/or mission, skills developed, experience gained, how the internship contributed to the intern’s educational and professional goals and/or helped shape them, and any scholarly publications, museum labels, or educational material that may arise from the internship experience. Use the following naming convention in submitting to Cecilia: Potter_Harry_internship_summary_Noguchi_Su19

2. A confirmation email of the hours completed upon completion of the internship sent by the intern’s mentor to Cecilia Flanagan at c.flanagan@uci.edu

Please note internship awards require approximately one month for processing following receipt of all materials noted above.

Internship description and daily tasks: The Noguchi Museum, founded and designed by Isamu Noguchi for the display of what he considered to be representative examples of his life’s work, is built around a 1920s industrial building, and features indoor-outdoor galleries, an outdoor sculpture garden, and two floors of interior exhibition space in the Long Island City arts district.

This internship provides the opportunity for the intern to make important contributions to the Noguchi Museum, gain experience and develop skills working in a renowned museum, experience life in and around New York City, and learn more about Isamu Noguchi.

The intern will work on one or more of the following projects under the supervision of the Noguchi Museum’s senior curator, Dakin Hart:
          
1)  Readying the Archives for complete publication online. This will include improving and enriching the basic data that will be available, particularly captions for the tens of thousands of photographs.
          
2) Researching, writing, developing entity biographies, core chronology and mini exhibitions for the website.

3) Working on half a dozen exhibitions, all of which will require research and discussion, including the collection show for 2020-21.

2. Your unofficial transcript reflecting a combined GPA of 3.0 or higher in art history courses at UCI and/or 3.0 overall GPA (use the following naming convention: Potter_Harry_transcript_Noguchi_Su19)
          
3. Your one-page resume including art history/visual studies courses completed at UCI (you may attach a list of classes separately if needed), any previous internships, and other relevant work, travel or volunteer experience ((use the following naming convention: Potter_Harry_resume_Noguchi_Su19).

4. A reference from an art history faculty member; this can be in writing submitted to Cecilia Flanagan at c.flanagan@uci.edu(use the following naming convention: Potter_Harry_transcript_Noguchi_Su19) or you may simply reference your faculty reference in your cover letter. You may also submit other references if you think they would be useful to our selection process.
