Current Art History majors have first priority followed by Art History minors, 4+1 MA Art History students, and Visual Studies PhD students.  In exceptional cases, other current School of Humanities majors and Art Department majors will be considered.

Orange County Museum of Art Internship Application Deadline: Wednesday, October 10th at 12 pm.

Start Date: Week of October 29, 2018
End Date: Week of April 19, 2019
Hours per week: 10 hours a week

Must be available to assist with at least one weekend and evening program per month of the internship.

  • OCMA application

  • Cover letter (one-page maximum) describing your interest and qualifications.

  • Your unofficial transcript reflecting a combined GPA of 3.0 or higher in art history courses at UCI and/or 3.0 overall GPA

  • Your resume (one-page maximum) including art history courses completed at UCI (you may attach a list of            classes separately if needed), any previous internships, and any other relevant work, travel or volunteer               experience.

  •  Name of one member of the art history or art department faculty who will provide  reference (student must contact reference in advance and ask if he/she is willing to act as reference). You may also submit other references if you think they would be useful to our selection process.


The successful applicant should plan to spend a total of approximately 230 hours at the internship and will receive a $3,500 award to be processed and paid following completion of the internship and submission of:

•           A one-page summary to be written by the intern upon internship completion describing what was learned, what skills were developed, what the intern specifically appreciated about the internship and how the experience could be improved, and

•           A confirmation email from the intern’s supervisor to c.flanagan@uci.edu

OCMA offers a 6-month multidisciplinary internship program consisting of both Curatorial and Public Engagement components.  We seek individuals with a strong interest in curatorial studies and art education in a museum setting.  He/she must be a self-starter, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as great attention to detail.  Applicants must be in good standing with UCI (3.0 GPA overall or higher). This Internship aims to educate the next generation of museum professionals as they work alongside current professionals in the field, while gaining valuable career experience through their assistance with the museum’s collection, exhibitions and public programs.

Curatorial activities:
The intern will assist the Curatorial Department with scholarly preliminary research towards artists and exhibitions for the upcoming exhibition cycle. Responsibilities include: conducting curatorial research on artists living and exhibiting in Southern California and the Pacific Rim geographical region using the OCMA research library and online sources; assisting with image and collections research; assisting with writing exhibition content; and providing support as needed on various curatorial projects. Interns will also have the opportunity to assist with several special community events and educational programs.

Public Engagement activities:
The intern will assist the Public Engagement Department with preparing public programming related to the museum’s current and upcoming exhibitions. He/she will assist with planning and facilitating upcoming programs including lectures, films, concerts, and performance events. The intern will also offer support for school tours and related activities. The intern may also assist with providing input and executing effective outreach strategies for programs.
