Fall 2020 Armenian Studies Courses at UC Irvine

Dear UCI students and community members,

Are you interested in studying and learning about Armenian history, culture, and language? UC Irvine's School of Humanities is offering three Armenian Studies classes in Fall 2020.

All these courses will be taught remotely and will be available for anyone who is interested in taking them.

UCI Students:

You may register for these courses through UCI Zot Portal.

General Public:

The general public also has an opportunity to enroll in these UCI courses without formal admission to the University, through UCI Department of Continuing Education’s Concurrent Enrollment program. Courses are available on a space-available basis with the approval of the course instructor and/or academic department.
Registration:

Please follow the steps below to submit an online request to register in a UCI course through Concurrent Enrollment. Paper submissions will no longer be accepted.

Please note that Fall 2020 Concurrent Enrollment requests will be accepted beginning Monday, September 28, 2020. You will not be able to submit an online request to register until then. Requests are due by 4:00pm PST on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.

1- Choose the course in which you want to enroll. View the UCI Schedule of Classes. Course descriptions are listed in the UCI General Catalogue. Some courses may have required co-requisite discussions. Please check the course listing in the UC Irvine Schedule of Classes or the General Catalogue.

2- Complete the electronic Concurrent Enrollment form for each course which you want to enroll in.

3- Requests will be accepted starting on Monday, September 28, 2020. The electronic registration form will be available on the concurrent registration page online. Requests are due by 4:00pm PST on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. Requests will be reviewed in the order received. DCE will forward your request to the appropriate Department/School.

4- Email notifications will be sent with the final decision regarding your course request. Please be sure to add “dce-services@uci.edu” to your approved contacts to ensure proper delivery. Check your email daily for any updates regarding your status. We will contact you once you are approved. It is not necessary to email us regarding your enrollment status.

5- If approved, submit your payment online through your DCE web account to officially enroll by the listed deadline given in the approval email. Instructions on how to complete this step will be provided in the email notification. If you do not submit payment within 2 business days, your approval will expire for the term/year.

General Guidelines:

    If you no longer intend to enroll in a course, please inform us immediately via email at dce-services@uci.edu so that we may cancel the request with the appropriate School.
    Pre-requisites may be listed and strictly enforced for your requested course. Please be prepared to provide proof that you have satisfied requirements if you are contacted by the School to avoid delay or cancellation of your request.
    While your request is under review, please be sure to attend all class sessions and make arrangements with your instructor to ensure you can access and submit any course material in a timely manner.

Once again, please be advised that the general public could start registering for these classes in the 1st week of Fall 2020 quarter beginning on Monday, September 28, 2020.

HIST 132E (Armenian Modern History; Instructor: Dr. Houri Berberian): This course covers the most important themes in the history of Armenians and Armenia in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries and does so within a regional (i.e., Middle East and Caucasus) and global context. It examines the problems and impact of imperialism, revolution, and genocide on the development of the history of Armenians. This course will have a strong thematic approach as we proceed from imperial rule in the nineteenth century through twentieth-century genocide, brief independence, sovietization, and independence again, culminating in the recent Velvet Revolution and its impact.

ARMN 1A (Elementary Armenian Language; Instructor: Dr. Talar Chahinian): Written and conversational Armenian for students with no knowledge of the language. Students learn the Armenian alphabet, read and comprehend simple texts, and carry basic conversation. Emphasis on reading and comprehension, grammar rules, and basic composition.

ARMN 2A (Intermediate Armenian Language; Instructor: Dr. Talar Chahinian): Designed to develop students’ ability to communicate further orally and in writing in Armenian (Western or Eastern) by consolidating knowledge of grammar, increasing vocabulary, and developing reading, comprehension, and writing.
