News Details

The newly created Naneh Graduate Research Fellowship received a number of exciting and promising proposals for projects that will contribute to the field of Armenian Studies and beyond. The first recipient of the fellowship is Pauline Pechakjian. Pechakjian seeks research funds to conduct interviews locally, in Armenia, as well as to visit the National Archives in Yerevan over the summer for her project on mid-twentieth century repatriation. Pechakjian’s research will contribute to our understanding of “repatriation” and the experience and memory of “repatriates” and, thus, will make a significant intervention in the scholarship of the construction of Armenian Diaspora-homeland relations as Soviet history and global “repatriation” more broadly.

An inspiring read, “In the Hands of Women: The Tradition and Transformation of the Oud” is also a piece written by Pauline Pechakjian. In her article published in She Shreds, a print publication dedicated to female musicians, she features Mary Goshtigian: a prominent Ottoman Armenian oud player and singer based in Istanbul during the early 20th century. The oud, Pauline says, provided a way for women to break through the patriarchal system and make a name for themselves through their music.

Congratulations, Pauline!
