News Details

On Saturday, March 3, 2018, Anteater alums who protested to establish Asian American Studies at UCI returned to attend the BADAAS Homecoming (the Beginnings of Activism for the Department of Asian American Studies).  A standing-room crowd gathered at the Orange County and Southeast Asian Archive Center to meet members of the BADAAS research team (Maribel Comparan, Ziggy Ghassemi, Alex Nguyen, Kevin Pham, Justine Trinh, and Cayla Zhang), mentored by Dr. Thuy Vo Dang (Curator for the SEAA) and Prof. Judy Tzu-Chun Wu (Chair of AAS).  The event featured an exhibition and digital narratives about the history of student activism at UCI that led to the creation of UCI’s Asian American Studies Department.  To learn more, see:  http://sites.uci.edu/badaas/.  The alums, led by Eileen Chun-Fruto, Hoa Su, Rachelle Ang, and Michelle Ko, are creating a Friends of Asian American Studies Fund to raise money for student scholarships in honor of Prof. John Liu and Dr. Mary Ann Takemoto, who offered the first Asian American Studies classes at UCI.  To contribute, please click here: https://www.humanities.uci.edu/aas/donate.php.
