Finding Kukan: Uncovering the Story of an Asian American Female Producer from the 1940s(flyer attached)
Directed by Robin Lung, 2016, 75 mins, English
Discussion Moderator: Justine Trinh

Film Synopsis
KUKAN, a landmark color film that revealed the atrocities of World War II China to audiences around the world, was the first ever American feature documentary to receive an Academy Award in 1942 and was considered lost for decades. When filmmaker Robin Lung discovers a badly damaged film print of KUKAN, she pieces together the inspirational tale of the two renegades behind the making of it -- Chinese American playwright Li Ling-Ai and cameraman Rey Scott.
Through a dynamic mix of verite, archival, and re-enactment footage, FINDING KUKAN creates an unforgettable portrait of a female filmmaking pioneer, and sheds light on the long history of racial and gender discrimination behind the camera, which continues to reverberate in Hollywood today.

The OC & SEAA Center Film Series
2018

The UCI Libraries Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive Center (OC & SEAA) is pleased to present a monthly film screening inviting community members to come together to view films and documentaries related to diversity issues. Each viewing will be followed by a dynamic discussion with the film curators, faculty experts, student leaders, or community activists creating a safe space for attendees to engage with various viewpoints, share thoughts, and hear the experts’ perspectives. We aim to raise awareness of diversity issues on campus and beyond, and to use film as a platform for dialogue, education and productive inquiry and action.

Screenings for the OC & SEAA Film Series will take place on the third Thursday of every month from 5 – 7 p.m. in the OC & SEAA Reading Room (Libraries Gateway Study Center, ground floor facing Aldrich Park). The screenings are free and open to all, but space is limited; light refreshments will be provided. Screenings are co-sponsored by the UCI Libraries Diversity Team, Department of Asian American Studies, Southeast Asian Student Association and the Cross-Cultural Center.

The flyer with the complete schedule of films is attached. For more information, please contact Thuy Vo Dang, tvodang@uci.edu.
