Miguel Picazo’s La tía Tula is considered one of the top classic works of 1960’s cinema.  Based on the homonymous novel by philosopher and writer, Miguel de Unamuno, this film signals the definitive transition from the powerful but limiting principles of neorealist narratives to a more introspective and sober view of cinema as a vehicle to probe the human condition in general and, in particular, that of individuals struggling to define themselves within an impenetrable moral system.  Like Unamuno’s novel, the film is open to various readings of an ideological, cultural, and religious nature.  Far from being a work of a bygone time, the film speaks directly to us as a compelling examination of the paradoxical mechanisms of the manipulation of the weak in a forbidding environment. The cast features iconic actress, Aurora Bautista, in which it is possibly the best performance of her career, well-known actor, Carlos Estrada, and a large repertoire of excellent actresses, Irene Gutiérrez Caba and Laly Soldevila, among them. The film has received international awards and it is still studied with critical acclaim.  La tía Tula will be presented in the O.V. in Spanish with English subtitles.
