The Making of a Great Column One: Storytelling tips from Steve Padilla, LA Times editor of the Column One

Tuesday, April 30, 11-12:20 in Humanities Gateway 1030

The Los Angeles Times has a rich history of showcasing artful, vivid, in-depth writing from its reporters from around the world. For decades, many of these slice-of-life narratives and features landed in a special spot in the print edition: The Column One (Traditionally, the Column One ran on the far left corner of the newspaper). This section for great storytelling has evolved with the digital age, and now also draws from video, photography, graphics, illustrations and audio to tell compelling, one-of-a-kind stories that resonate with readers.

This panel, open to the UCI community and public and sponsored by the Literary Journalism Program, will celebrate Column One-style storytelling with Steve Padilla, editor of the Column One and director of Metpro (an editorial training program) at the LA Times.  Padilla will offer tips on how to find, write and edit these stories for voice, style and narrative structure.

Free and open to the public; all welcome!  For more information or for disability accommodations, contact Patricia Pierson at piersonp@uci.edu.

RSVPs are recommended but not required.  Light refreshments will be served.
