Writing, Creativity, Suffering: A Roundtable with UCI Student Authors

This past summer, the Center for Medical Humanities provided grants to 6 MFA students in UCI's Creative Writing program, all of whose work aligned with the theme of its recent Sawyer Seminar, "Suffer Well." Join us for a special roundtable event in which these writers reflect on writing about suffering and share some of the work that they composed. This session will be moderated by Dr. Johanna Shapiro.

Meet the Students

Helena Li grew up in China, Maryland, and the Bay Area. She is a second-year poet in the MFA Program and her work centers around place and family.

Jacob Hyatt is a second-year Fiction student in the University of California, Irvine's MFA Program. He has lived most of his life in Maine, which features heavily in his fiction.

Leah Anderson grew up in Hawaii and California. She studied at Yale and Brown before coming to UC Irvine.

Leandro Fefer is a writer of fiction who is generally glad to be here. He holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of California Irvine and genuinely hopes you like his stories.

Michael Malpass grew up in Seattle and studied philosophy at the University of Chicago. He is working on a novel.

Nick Martino is an MFA candidate in poetry at the University of California Irvine. His work has been published or is forthcoming in Foothill Journal, Carve Magazine, and Sugar House Review.
