The Pericles Project: New Swan film premiere

New Swan Shakespeare Center     Aug 21 2021 | 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM Zoom meeting

The Pericles Project
Pericles is lost. Literally, figuratively, and emotionally. Forced out of his home, he is propelled into an Odysseus-like adventure to dangerous seas and faraway countries. In his travels, Pericles finds a wife, a child and the most precious gift of all: his own identity.

Pericles is a fantastical tale of love, loss and faith, but it is also a superb example of the rewards of examining different cultures. Today, those that are succeeding in an increasingly global world are those that are embracing multiculturalism. Pericles teaches us that understanding the cultures of others allows us to know ourselves – and that there is danger in ignorance. We cannot think of a theme more relevant in this time of diverse richness and, simultaneously, polar division.

What is the goal of the project?
Our main objective is to introduce New Swan audiences to a terrific play that they might not otherwise be familiar with. Through exposition, visual art elements, and performances of key scenes, we are making this fantastical story jump off the page and come to life.

Who is Gower?
The character of Gower is a central element of the play and a key figure in this project. Gower is a powerful conjurer in this world and, simultaneously, the spirit who becomes our narrator.  He is able to jump into the story when our heroes need guidance. Thus, he bridges the gaps between our performance scenes.
