Shakespeare’s Kitchen: An Evening with Francine Segan and Chef Jessica VanRoo

Dost thou think because thou art so virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?
Twelfth Night

In honor of UCI’s production of Twelfth Night, New Swan Shakespeare and Anteater Test Kitchen are pleased to present this special evening on food and feasting in Renaissance England. Francine Segan, author of Shakespeare’s Kitchen: Renaissance Recipes for the Contemporary Cook, will share her insights into the feasts and entertainments of Shakespeare’s day, when dinner guests were treated to concoctions like fire-breathing roast peacock, enormous savory pies with claws poking through the crust; and dinner rolls shaped like deer filled with spiced wine “blood.” In England’s country houses, women often wrote down recipes for favorite dishes and home remedies, giving us insight into women as resourceful managers of household stuff.

Chef Jessica VanRoo of UCI’s Anteater Test Kitchen will demonstrate a menu of recipes that you can try at home. Event moderated by Julia Lupton.
