Graduate Student Workshop Panel: Writing for the Public

 History     Oct 27 2020 | 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Zoom

This quarter the Graduate Student Workshop will host a panel discussion on "Writing for the Public." Three UCI faculty have very generously agreed to share their insights in bridging academic and public audiences. Our three presenters will be:

  • Amy DePaul, an award-winning journalist and instructor in the Literary Journalism program at UCI who regularly writes on issues of public health.
  • Dr. Emily Baum, whose work on the history of medicine in China has appeared in Aeon and the Los Angeles Review of Books.
  • Dr. David Fedman, a historian of Japan who is currently finishing work on Paper City Tokyo, a documentary about the firebombing of Tokyo during WWII.
Some of the questions we will consider include:
  • What are the differences between writing for the public vs. writing for an academic audience?
  • How do I translate my scholarly research for a wider public audience?
  • How do I approach a publication with a pitch for an article?

We'll hear from the three speakers and then transition to a Q&A discussion. So those of you that are curious about getting into more "public-facing" writing, be sure to come with your questions.
