The Forum for the Academy and the Public Fall Events Presents: Who Do They Think We Are? American Identity on the World Stage

 Humanities Center     Dec 1 2020 | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Online

Join the Forum for the Academy and the Public for a series of panels that will consider the global perception of the United States.  In collaboration with the Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB), international authors and journalists will offer perspectives on the American identity in the 21st century.

This series follows the 2017 symposium "Who Do We Think We Are?" That event considered self-perceptions of the American Democratic ideal in the aftermath of the 2016 Presidential election.  This year’s series will widen the focus to reflect on the perceptions of our global friends and neighbors.

Each event will be an hour long, beginning with a 15-minute moderated Q&A with our first writer, followed by 15 minutes of audience Q&A. This will be followed by a 15-minute response from
our second writer, then more general Q&A.

Jeff Wasserstrom, Chancellor's Professor of History, moderated a conversation with author and foreign correspondent Pallavi Aiyar, Megha Rajagopalan, award-winning international correspondent for BuzzFeed News, and Melissa Chan, Berlin-based national and foreign affairs reporter.
