Vanishing Chinatown: The World of the May's Photo Studio

Vanishing Chinatown: The World of the May’s Photo Studio is a new documentary about the May’s Photo Studio, which documents a significant part of the history of San Francisco Chinatown from early to mid-20th century. The May’s Studio staged family portraits in spite of family separations due to the Chinese Exclusion Act, recorded theatrical performances and special events, and documented individual and collective dreams of “becoming American.” Corinne Chan Takayama, the granddaughter of Leo Chan Lee, the creator of the May’s Photo Studio, takes us through the decades of family and community memories in Vanishing Chinatown.

The screening of Vanishing Chinatown (about 27 minutes) will be followed by a panel discussion.

The panelists include

    Wylie Wong,  Antique Asian Art dealer and collector, and the “savior” of more than 700 May’s Studio photographs.
    Emiko Omori, Director of Vanishing Chinatown: The World of the May’s Photo Studio
    Isabella Quintana, Assistant professor of Asian American Studies, UCI
    Qianru Li, PhD student of Drama, UCI

The panel will be moderated by Daphne Lei, Professor of Drama, UCI
