Transnational Equivalences and Inequalities

Speculative Futures Symposium

UC Irvine, Friday, April 24th. This symposium will take up the question of speculation and futurity across borders. A recent meme with the South Korean director Bong Joon-ho quotes him as saying, "We all live in the same country now: that of capitalism." This symposium will take stock of this view from multiple lines of approach. How is the future produced through the reproduction, categorization, and mobility of bodies? How has the speculative mode been affected by the deterioration of the postwar rules-based international order, financial crisis, environmental disaster, and pandemics? What is the fate of "the future" as an epistemic category? While priority will be given to current UCI graduate students eligible for funding, applications from non-UCI affiliates are encouraged. Applications from artists, writers, and organizers are especially encouraged.
