May 4-6:  We are thrilled to welcome Patrick Chamoiseau, the award-winning author of Texaco, a chronicle of Martinique from the days of slavery to the twenty-first century. Eight selected graduate students will work for 2 months on translating into English Mr. Chamoiseau’s most recent book, La matière de l’absence, which evokes his childhood and the strong presence of his recently deceased mother.

On May 4 and 5, the graduate students will take part in two consecutive workshops during which Mr. Chamoiseau will review and discuss the students’ translation. On the third day, May 6, the workshop will be opened up to the general public. Rose Réjouis, the translator of Texaco and Associate Professor at The New School, will join Mr. Chamoiseau on the podium for a discussion of the translation process. This is a groundbreaking format allowing graduate students, faculty, and members of the larger community the time to develop a meaningful conversation with one of the world’s great authors.
