Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon: Women's Biographies

 Humanities Center     May 17 2019 | 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM UCI Langson Library, Room 228

Summary of event [ edit ]
As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals
looking for information about any topic. However, only about 17% of biographies on Wikipedia are about
women. The UCI School of Humanities, UCI Humanities Commons, Ridge 2 Reef, UCI Libraries, Society for
Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), Association for Women in Science
(AWIS), and Women in Red are delighted to announce a wiki event to improve diversity on Wikipedia.During this training, attendees of all experience levels, including no prior experience, will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to women and underrepresented groups. #UCIWikiWomen

Purpose [ edit ]
• to have fun and learn how to edit Wikipedia articles
• to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating
biographies
• to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action on a specific area
• to support Wikipedia in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women, women’s works, and
women’s issues
