Typography Basics with Graphic Designer Ellen Lupton

Type SpaEllen Lupton, author of Thinking with Type and many other books, will lead a three-hour "type spa" introducing basic graphic design principles in a fun and easy format. Expand your visual playbook with fonts, grids, and layout tips while creating a typographic poster.

Event moderated by Ellen's twin sister Julia Lupton (UCI English). 

Lunch will be provided. Some knowledge of Adobe In-Design or Illustrator software required.

Participants are asked to bring the text of one recipe to the workshop. Choose a recipe that is meaningful to you: family tradition, cultural heritage, keto/paleo/vegan, sustainable dining, regional cuisine, brown bag lunch, dinner for two, bilingual, Cheesecake Factory, or any other theme of personal relevance.

 Ellen Lupton  is a writer, curator, educator, and designer. She is Senior Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. Recent exhibitions include The Senses: Design Beyond Vision, Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial, How Posters Work, and Beautiful Users. Lupton is founding director of the Graphic Design MFA Program at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) in Baltimore, where she has authored numerous books on design processes, including Thinking with Type, Graphic Design Thinking, Graphic Design: The New Basics, and Type on Screen. Her book Design Is Storytelling was published by Cooper Hewitt in 2017. She is a 2019 Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
