Tang Shu-Wing Theatre Studio presents Scenes from "Macbeth"

New Swan Shakespeare Center     Feb 4 2020 | 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM Irvine Barclay Theatre

Hong Kong Macbeth

2020 Kirk Davis Jr. Public Shakespeare Lecture
with additional support from Janis and Ed Carpenter

In this lecture-demonstration director Tang Shu-Wing and members of his Hong Kong-based company will share scenes and techniques from their internationally-acclaimed production of "Macbeth."

In 2015, Tang Shu-Wing Theatre Studio was invited to present their landmark production of Macbeth at London’s Globe to Globe Shakespeare Festival, at the Globe Theatre. In this unique lecture-demonstration, artistic director Tang Shu-Wing will discuss this fascinating physical theatre production of Shakespeare’s Scottish play, and members of the Studio will present several scenes from the production. Inspired by the tradition of Asian physical theatre, this version of Macbeth transmits the spirit of the play through a succession of stylized images, where body expression, physical movements and live accompaniment expose the characters' relationship as well as the director's vision of time and space.

Please also join us for a symposium and discussion on Monday, February 3, HG1030, featuring Tang Shu-Wing (Hong Kong), Andrea Goldman (UCLA History), Daphne Lei (UCI Drama), and Solomon Yu (Beijing University).
