The Journey Home: A Recital in Honor of Veterans Day

This virtual live recital about war and homecoming features song by Schubert, Vaughan Williams, Berlin, and more.

Inspired by the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I, The Journey Home tells the story of men and women who must find their way back home, literally and figuratively. While most of the music is directly related to World War I, its themes are universal, reaching as far back as Homer’s Odyssey. “The Journey Home” features music from Schubert’s "Der Wanderer" and Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel and popular WWI era tunes by Oley Speaks and Irving Berlin. The evening is a companion program to Brancy and Dugan’s critically acclaimed “A Silent Night: A WWI Memorial in Song,” which commemorated the centennial of the beginning of World War I and was performed at UC Irvine in 2018.

Grammy Winning Baritone John Brancy‘s intense musicality and communicative power place him among the finest of baritones of his generation.  Hailed by the New York Times as “a vibrant, resonant presence,” Brancy won First Prize in the Art Song Division of the 2018 Concours Musical International de Montreal. The win that recognized him as a premiere interpreter of Art Song repertoire in our time.  The New Jersey native also won First Prize in the 2018 Lotte Lenya Competition in New York, Second Prize at the 2017 Wigmore Hall Competition in London and prior to that won the media prize in the 2017 Belvedere International Singing Competition in Moscow and First Prize in the Jensen Foundation Vocal Competition in 2015. He is also a past First Prize winner of the Marilyn Horne Song Competition and the Sullivan Foundation Grand Prize.

Pianist Peter Dugan’s debut performances with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony were described by the Los Angeles Times as “stunning” and by the SF Chronicle as “fearlessly athletic.” He is heard nationwide as the newly announced host of NPR’s beloved program From the Top.  He has appeared as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician across North America and abroad.  This year he makes his debuts at Wigmore Hall and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and can be heard as the piano soloist on a new release of Ives’ Fourth Symphony from Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony, a recording which the New York Times named one of the top classical albums of 2019 .  Prizing versatility as the key to the future of classical music, Mr. Dugan is equally at home in classical, jazz, and pop idioms.
