UCI TRANSFER TRANSITION TIPS

  1. Be prepared for the 10-week quarter system. Adjusting to the quarter system is often the biggest challenge faced by transfers. The quarter moves along very rapidly. You don't have a few weeks to ease into a course when midterms are the fourth week of classes. Trying to catch up on your reading and/or coursework once you are behind can be overwhelming. Do not overload yourself in your first quarter, especially if you are beginning upper-division courses. Typically, 12 units is plenty.

  2. Check your UCI e-mail account regularly, and read your messages. Important messages will be sent from faculty, as well as information about opportunities, events, and, deadlines. Your e-mail account does not hold an unlimited number of messages so remember to delete old messages.

  3. See an academic counselor regularly. Your academic counselor can help you select courses, and tell you how you are progressing toward completing degree requirements. Make an appointment with a counselor at least two times a year; they are happy to see you even if you don't have a problem!

  4. Get to know faculty. Faculty can be the key to your success at UCI. Get to know your professors by visiting them during their office hours, sitting in the front of your classes, and participating in discussions. If you plan to attend graduate school you will probably need letters of recommendation, and you will want strong letters from faculty who know you and the quality of your academic work.

  5. Become familiar with requirements, policies and regulations. The UCI General Catalogue , and the Schedule of Classes , contain policies and requirements you are responsible for knowing and following. Also, be aware of school/program rules.

  6. Visit the Career Center . Connect with the Career Center during your first quarter. Take advantage of career and graduate school planning workshops and meet with a career counselor.

  7. Ask for help. If you begin to feel overwhelmed, ask for help early on. Your academic counselor can refer you to offices that can assist you.

  8. Get involved ! Participating in an activity outside of classes will help you meet people, build a support network, and add to your UCI experience. Consider getting involved in the Transfer Student Association.
