- Placement testing
is required for admission to the following languages:
Spanish, Chinese,
Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. Placement testing is currently
recommended for German as well. Pre-registration is required
for the placement exam. See the Academic Testing Center website at www.testingcenter.uci.edu
to register for a test.
- Placement from
high school: In general, each
year in high school counts for one quarter at UCI. Thus, a student
who had three years of high school Russian, which would technically
replace our 1A, 1B, and 1C, and place them in 2A, may decide to
enter the sequence at 1C instead. A student who wishes to "go
back" more than one quarter must have the permission of the
language coordinator for that department, who must notify the
academic counseling office (otherwise the student will not receive
credit).
- Once students have
passed a course in a language sequence, they must progress in
the language from that point forward. A student will not receive
credit for a course lower in the sequence than the one already
passed.
-
Grading Policy for courses in a language other than English: Students must
earn a C (2.0) or better in all first- and second-year language other than English courses in order to advance to the next level. If a student
wishes to repeat a deficient grade, defined as C- or lower, in
one of these classes, it must be repeated prior to continuing
on to the next course in the sequence. Freshmen entering Fall 2007 and students who choose to follow Fall 2007 degree requirements must earn a grade of C or better in the sixth quarter in order to fulfill the School's language other than English requirement.
- Courses taken to
satisfy the School's language other than English requirement must be taken
for letter grades. If a student takes one or more of these courses
on P/NP, they will be required to continue on in the language
to "make up" for the P/NP course(s). The reason for
this is to prevent students from protecting their GPAs by electing
the P/NP option.
- The Humanities
language other than English requirement is never waived.
- For students who
took a particular foreign language in high school, there is a
five-year "forgiveness" rule. If it has been five or
more years since the student took the language in high school,
they can start over with 1A. However, if the language you wish
to enroll in requires placement testing, you must take the test
regardless of the length of time since your high school language.
Note, however, that this does not apply to college coursework.
Students cannot repeat college credit, no matter how long ago
they took the course. However, some students elect to retake coursework
knowing they will not receive credit.
- Students are not allowed to drop or add
a course in Humanities after the end of the second week of the
quarter unless truly exceptional circumstances are involved. This
is particularly important for courses in a language other than English, given
the amount of time the teachers put into the instruction of each
student.
- Native Speakers. In general, testing results
for the campus wide breadth requirement (Category VI) do not satisfy
any part of the School of Humanities language other than English requirement.
Testing for the East Asian languages is an exception to this policy.
- Native speakers
who are majoring in their language and who place well into third-year
or even fourth-year foreign languages must substitute other (usually
upper-division) courses for the language
courses
they have "skipped" which are required for the major.
