The Humanities Peer Mentor Program is designed
to give new first year students a comfortable start at UCI and in
the Humanities. Small groups of new freshpeople meet weekly with
successful upper-division students majoring in the Humanities. The
meetings address academic issues or are spent relaxing and having
fun. Groups might explore the UCI campus, attend a workshop on time
management and procrastination, enjoy a meal at a local restaurant,
etc. Mentees keep journals in which they express ideas and raise
issues for their mentors and take part in one whole group workshop
each quarter. Mentees earn two units of P/NP credit for their participation
in Fall and Winter quarters.
Another focus of the program is to encourage
and assist the student mentors to go on to graduate school. They
can choose to work closely with faculty sponsors. They write a paper
during the Winter quarter documenting their experiences in the program
and researching important issues pertaining to their mentor groups.
Mentors earn four P/NP units for their participation in each of
the Fall and Winter quarters.
