Korean majors will aim to speak and understand Korean proficiently in professional and social environments, read Han’gul texts with facility, and be able to read some Sino-Korean texts (text with Chinese characters in a mixed script setting) with the use of character dictionaries. In addition, Korean majors will learn about Korea’s rich literary heritage and learn about major literary works from the pre-modern and modern period; learn about contemporary Korean culture and society. The culminating work of the major is a junior-senior colloquium where all students will demonstrate research and writing abilities by writing papers using primary sources. Students will demonstrate proficient in translating as well as skills of critical reasoning and clear writing in their junior-senior colloquium papers.
