Undergraduate Program
Using methodologies from the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences (linguistics in particular), our Spanish Major examines the structure, perspectives and philosophical approaches of the literatures and cultures of Iberia (Catalan included), Latin America and US Latinos by placing them within their sociohistorical contexts. In addition to fostering cultural awareness and familiarity with the Hispanic world, this process will provide you with a meaningful liberal arts training. This, in turn, is complemented by the acquisition of advanced critical thinking and language skills, as students are routinely taught to read and analyze texts and discourses in the context of existing Latin American and Iberian criticism, as well as write and speak Spanish with clarity and accuracy.
The major requirements begin after the completion of six quarters of language study, the minimum requirement for all Humanities majors. There are three emphases: (1) Literature and Culture, (2) Spanish for Future Teachers, and (3) Spanish, Latin American, and U.S. Latino Cinema. Students may want to first take our upper-division core courses (SPAN 101A, 101B, 107 or 113A, 119) in the Department before they decide on any given Emphasis, as this may help them decide which speciality best suits them. For details, see Major Requirements in the UCI catalogue.
Often complemented by UCI's Education Abroad Program, this well-integrated program will prepare you to express yourself creatively in Spanish, to understand and respect cultural diversity, and to make contributions to the intellectual and cultural growth of the global community. Our Education Abroad Program is extensive (UC has over 3000 students abroad at any one time!), and can accommodate students in many countries (Spain, Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, Brazil, etc.) and programs.
Our faculty are very productive scholars. Their many books and articles cover a wide range of areas, including literature, linguistics, film and cultural studies. You may obtain information about their individual emphases by looking up their website.
We invite you to contact any of us via e-mail if you have questions for individual faculty (e-mails are listed on the website). The Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Armin Schwegler, has ample experience with (under)-graduate Spanish and Portuguese programs, and would be happy to discuss whatever questions you may have. If you would like to see what some of our former students say about the excellence and usefulness of our Spanish major, click on Student Testimonials. We also encourage students to visit our information about fellowships for Spanish majors.
