TEACHING ASSISTANT POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

With preference given to Spanish and Portuguese graduate students, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese is seeking applicants for Teaching Assistantships (title code: 2310) in fall 2009, winter 2010, and spring 2010; the quarterly salary for TAships is $5,545.67 for these positions at 50% time. TAs are also compensated by Graduate Studies in the form of a partial fee remission (100% of the sum of the Education and Registration Fees), as well as health insurance. This position is covered by a collective bargaining contract; the contract is available at http://www.rgs.uci.edu/union/asecon.htm. As a Teaching Assistant, it is expected that workload not to exceed 220 hours per quarter.

As specified by the School of Humanities, all Teaching Assistants must remove grades of "NR" or "Incomplete" from transcripts by August 29, 2009 for employment as a TA for ANY quarter in 2009-10.

TA Training usually takes place during Orientation Week at the beginning of Fall Quarter, and is mandatory for all TAs.

As a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, TAs are expected to be available for, and perform the following duties, wherever and whenever applicable, on a regular basis as directed, and under the direct supervision and direction of the Language Curriculum Director (LCD), as well as be familiar with the current versions of MS Word or WordPerfect, MS Excel or some other GUI e-mail program, GradeSource, and Quia:

  • Attend the Beginning-Of-Quarter meeting for your assigned level.
  • Be present and prepared for each day of class.
  • Begin class on time, deliver a coherent lesson, and end your class on time.
  • Prepare and plan each individual lesson.
  • Photocopy all relevant material for your class on time (quizzes, tests, handouts, etc.).
  • Check homework on a regular basis.
  • Return all test, quizzes, and compositions the very next class day.
  • Read student journals on a regular basis and in a timely fashion.
  • Prepare, administer, correct, and grade quizzes.
  • Prepare, administer, correct, and grade unit tests.
  • Critique and make suggestions on tests prepared by your colleagues.
  • Meet all established and announced deadlines.
  • Make an appointment and meet with the LCD to review any test you prepared.
  • Correct and grade compositions.
  • Grade taped interviews (SPAN 15 only).
  • Be available during two announced office hours per week of instruction.
  • Discuss your Instructor Evaluation Report (IER) with the LCD, or another member of the faculty so delegated by the Chair, after the observation.
  • Prepare, administer, correct, and grade the Final Exam or paper of your section.
  • Critique and make suggestions on the final exam prepared by your colleagues.
  • Calculate Final Grades.
  • Prepare and turn in all End-Of-Quarter paperwork as directed by the LCD in the appropriate "End-of-Quarter" memo.
  • Maintain a professional attitude at all times.

While this list of duties tries to cover the most common types of duties you may be expected to perform as a TA, it, by no means, claims to be final. The Department reserves the right to add, delete, change or modify each and any part thereof as long as such change is based on academic judgment, and it does not go beyond the 220 hour workload limit, as stated in the agreement with the union.

To apply, please send your cv or resume via email to Professor Juergen Kempff at jkempff@uci.edu. Via regular mail: Prof. Juergen Kempff, Language Curriculum Director, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, 322 Humanities Hall, UCI, Irvine, CA 92697-5275.
