Welcome to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the School of Humanities at the University of California, Irvine.

The Department offers programs of study leading to B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Spanish, Latin American and Chicano/Latino Literatures and Cultures. The Department also offers undergraduate and graduate minors in Portuguese.

While members of our faculty are recognized nationally and internationally for their research, creative writing and contributions to the academic profession, one of the Department’s highest priorities is to maintain teaching excellence. Our goal is to provide students with a level-specific, solid education in the diverse fields of study that we offer. Many of our undergraduate and graduate courses reflect our faculty’s interest in bringing together historical, critical-theoretical and interdisciplinary perspectives in the study of literature and other cultural artifacts such as film. At the graduate level, students are encouraged to take courses in other university programs as, for example, Women's Studies, the Critical Theory Emphasis, Comparative Literature, and Film Studies.
